Born in New York in 1929, Susan Alexander’s parents saw her potential early and encouraged formal trained. She studied at the Pratt Institute, the all-female Skidmore College, and later spent a year at l’école des Beaux-Arts in Switzerland.
Alexander visited Jamaica in 1951, and stayed. Her work has consistent themes: horses, dance, love and Jamaican people, using a variety of media ranging from bronze to charcoal.
In 1977 she started an art programme at two of the country’s maximum security prisons.
