Watson Statue Of Dr. Martin Luther King

 

The City of Atlanta has selected Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson   to create a double life-size statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The statue sit in downtown Atlanta near two of its landmarks: the CNN Headquarters and the Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Watson was one of three shortlisted sculptors and presented his vision last May. It's a triumph for Jamaica given that Dr. King said on his first visit here that  he never felt more at home anywhere in the world. “In Jamaica, I feel like a human being,” said the Civil Rights leader.

Earlier this year Watson unveiled his statue of another hero, the Hon. Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett-Coverely in Gordon Town, and busts of Jamaica's seven heroes in Heroes Walk at Emancipation Park.

Admission to the National Gallery of Jamaica is free every Saturday in July and August from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

This fall the Swiss will get a chance to see the work of five Jamaican artists in Geneva.

Jamaican artist and sculptor, Nakazzi Hutchinson, will showcase her glass and ceramic masks and sculptures at the Zari Gallery, in London from July 4 – 19.

Liberty Hall’s Summer Arts programme this summer runs from July 8 to August 2, with classes Mondays to Fridays 9:00AM to 2:00PM.

Corporate Jamaica is doing its part in bringing art to downtown Kingston.

This event on June 30, 2019, features the return of the International Reggae Poster Contest charity auction for the first time since its 2012.
