THE MET OPENS CARIBBEAN EXHIBITION

The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art’s special exhibition on artistic achievements of early Caribbean civilizations opens December 16. Titled Arte del mar: Artistic Exchange in the Caribbean, the exhibition is the first to focus on artistic exchanges among the Taíno civilizations of the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico) and the coastal societies in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Honduras before the 16th century. The collection includes more than 40 sculptural works in three primary sections focused on ritual knowledge, ceremonial performance, and political power.
