Jamaican Artist

George Rodney

George Rodney (1936-) was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica. He watched the Vincent Van Gogh biopic Lust for Life, read the book and became consumed with the desire to go to the Jamaica School of Art and develop his talent. His tutor Kenneth Robertson convinced him to take his work more seriously. He left in 1961 to study at the Art Students’ League in New York. When he returned he worked at the Jamaica Broadcasting Company.

He is noted for his semi-abstract conception of space, his strong draughtsmanship and precise composition. In 1975, he was awarded the Silver Musgrave Medal.
