Erwin De Vries

 

Erwin De Vries (1929-2018), was born in Paramaribo, Suriname. He studied in the Netherlands, where his work is displayed at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. He was commissioned by the Dutch government to create the Nationaal monument slavernijverleden (National Monument to Freedom from Slavery), that is on permanent display in Oosterpark, Amsterdam in 2002.

 

He frequently exhibited in Jamaica. People often compared his work to that of Barrington Watson. In 2000, he was awarded the Caribbean Arts and Culture Award for Outstanding Contribution. He died at 88 in Paramaribo.
