Kimani Beckford Gets Grant

Jamaican artist Kimani Beckford is among the winners of the Dean Collection 20 St(art)ups grants to artists from Africa, Asia, North and South America, Europe, and Australia. The Dean Collection is a contemporary art initiative by singer Alicia Keys and producer, rapper and art collector Swizz Beatz. The artists each get $5,000 that is unrestricted, but four of them can get $25,000 more if they do something ambitious with it. The artists work in a range of media and styles, including painting, design, sculpture, collage and installation.  Some have shown at major galleries internationally while others only have local pedigree, like Beckford. Beatz says the grant is not only intended to support the artist work, but to nurture and sharpen their business skills.
