Berette Gets Vermont Art Residency

Berette Macaulay has landed an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Centre. She heads there in June 2018 to complete one of her projects, Women Who Raise Us, and to develop new photographic works and poetry for exhibition and for her next monograph. Macaulay’s works mostly in photography and photo-based mixed media.

The VSC is the largest international artists' and writers' residency program in the United States. It is a fully equipped and supportive environment where there are at any one time 50 - 60 artists and writers with residencies of 2 to 12 weeks at the historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont. They are expected to either create new work, experiment with new methodologies, or complete specific projects.

Macaulay will be at VSC for four weeks getting both accommodations and her own private studio. There are also several workshop studios for sculpture, painting, print works, writing, and photography darkrooms.

“The fellowship is an opportunity to meet other artists and expand ideas and practice in new media using facilities that may not be available where you live, (in Jamaica),” says Macaulay. "This is an exciting step and opportunity in my practice.” Macaulay explained that VSC also hosts artist studio visits that are very useful for having work critiqued.

Other Jamaicans who have done residencies at VSC include artist Ebony G. Patterson and writer Kwame Dawes.
